Sheriff LeRoy Green, Jr. is the second, of seven
children born to the union of LeRoy Green, Sr.
and now deceased Florence Green of Kansas City,
Kansas. He attended schools on both sides of the
river. Saint Joseph's grade school and Manuel
High School in Kansas City, Missouri and Saint
Mary's grade school and Bishop Ward in Kansas
City, Kansas. Upon graduating from Bishop Ward
High School he later attended Kansas City Kansas
Community College.
Growing up with a father -who was a professional
boxer; LeRoy later became a Golden Gloves
champion as well as a professional boxer
claiming the title of Midwest Middleweight
Champion. Though long retired from boxing LeRoy
has through out the years been involved with
many activities including Tai Kwon Do,
kick-boxing, softball, and instructing a
physical fitness class.
LeRoy and his long time spouse Debbra share two
daughters together, LaTessa and LaToya. He also
has two children from a prior marriage, Patricia
and LeRoy III. He is a Christian man who strives
to be all that God would have him to be. When he
ran for public office he said, as sheriff he
will carry "a badge for the community, a gun for
public safety and a Bible to do the right thing,
for after all, I am a Christian first."
Though he campaigned and was elected Sheriff of
Wyandotte County, he'll tell people that he does
not consider himself to be a politician. When
referring to his position as Sheriff, he 'II
just say, "That's my job. I have a job to do and
I'm going to do it".
His career with the Wyandotte County Sheriffs
Office began in 1978 when he was employed as a
detention deputy. In 1982 Green commanded the
Wyandotte County Tag Enforcement Unit. This Unit
brought millions of dollars back into the
county, which would have otherwise gone to
neighboring counties due to people illegally
registering their vehicles. This unit was also
instrumental in taking vehicles off the streets
that were not registered, tagged, or insured. In
that same year, he also became a certified
Defensive Tactic Instructor from the Kansas Law
Enforcement Training School. During his career
with the Department, he has also served as a
member of the Metro Squad.
In 1985 Green was promoted to the rank of
Sergeant and remained a Sergeant till 1995 when
appointed by former Sheriff Mike Dailey to be
his Undersheriff. Green made history when he was
appointed the first Afro-American Sheriff of
Wyandotte County, Kansas and in the State of
Kansas in 1999 upon the resignation of Sheriff
Dailey.
Early in 2001, he campaigned and was elected
Sheriff by sixty-four (64) percent of the votes
on April 3. Green received more votes than did
any other candidate running for office in that
election. Again, in 2005 Sheriff Green was re
elected with 78% of the vote.
The Sheriff takes great pride in his work, and
continues to be a training instructor in the
Wyandotte County Sheriffs Office Basic Training
Academy, for new deputies, despite his busy
schedule as Sheriff. |
